China’s Hidden Debt Time Bomb Is Finally Exploding Everyone keeps talking about U.S. debt at ~120% of GDP, but they’re missing the bigger story. When you include households and corporates, total U.S. debt is around 220% of GDP. Now look at China. Official government debt is only ~60%, but once you include local governments and corporate liabilities, total debt balloons to over 320% of GDP. That makes China one of the most indebted economies in the world. And here’s the real problem. China’s growth model depends on exports, but margins are collapsing due to brutal price wars and overcapacity. There are reportedly 150 EV manufacturers, most losing money, surviving only on subsidies. At the same time, Beijing is spending heavily on internal security. Stability maintenance alone is estimated at $300 billion annually, rivaling defense spending. This is what pressure looks like. High debt. Weak profitability. Rising social stress. From the outside, it looks strong. Under the surface, the system is stretched to its limits.
