@TearShapedHeart Been playing a ton of Infinity these days and the bluffing element is crazy. The army list you show your opponent doesn’t show points, camouflaged models, hidden deployment models, deep strike models, or which model is your warlord. You have to just guess based on context clues.

@DevinGoure You’re misunderstanding. Any attempt to write is admirable. The only point I’m making is that we don’t need the world to be flooded with a new algorithmically generated novel every time an AI bro gets a vague and fleeting idea for a story.

@Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 Nobody has “good ideas but can’t write” because actual writing is where all the quality comes from. Non-writers overvalue ideas to the extreme, like you’re doing now. Ideas are the cheapest and most easy to acquire part of writing. We do NOT need AI slop of everyone’s ideas

@omibaloney “But my idea is incredible! The only problem is that I don’t have all that technical writing skill mumbo jumbo like you do. If you do literally all the work of actually writing my vague idea then we can split the earnings 50/50!”

Every time I tell someone I’m a screenwriter they go “I have an idea for a movie!” Yeah me too bozo, about a million of ‘em. There’s a reason you can’t copyright ideas, only their EXPRESSION. Prompting is not writing. Writing is writing. Writing is hard, and that’s why it matters

@Otakundead @Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 I’m sorry, is your solution to a repetitive tropey media epidemic to have people come up with interesting ideas and then… feed them into a machine that functions by regurgitating repetitive tropes that it’s been trained to copy? Are you serious?

@talassarian @Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 Ever considered that so much media is very repetitive and just a slight divergence from common tropes because what we now need is good execution of very novel and even fringe, not immediately convincing ideas, not just well-executed boring ideas?

One of biggest problems with Gen AI is the extreme Dunning-Kruger effect it gives to very mediocre people who have no idea what creativity is. AI slop books are flooding Amazon and further diluting the quality of everything. No, running a prompt doesn’t make you a writer.
Alexis Ames@alexis_writes1

It is enormously frustrating as a scifi author that we have been writing stories for DECADES about why it's bad to hand your thinking over to a machine, and then Gen AI comes along and everyone starts using it without question.

@taokazarry @Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 Your own writing will teach you so many things, including what it actually needs to be. It will tell you what parts of it need to be changed and surprise you in ways you never imagined. It’s sublime. People who see a finished story as the only rewarding part of writing are blind

@talassarian @Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 100%, it's the same for most artistic mediums. You find the genius of your idea in the process, and in iteration. You learn over times that what felt like an amazing idea is sometimes a total stinker... and other times, an amusing little joke blooms into something amazing.

@dingaling202 @mixuen_chan The sheer diversity of paths that these demigods can go down in their lives is part of what makes them compelling. A loyalist and traitor stare at one another and see a gross reflection of what they could be under different circumstances. Kindness and cruelty both should be shown

@mixuen_chan I think the key is in that they are CAPABLE. A lot of times they aren't actually nice. I think it's cool with the tragedy of being bred to wage eternal war and how that diminishes their natural humanity. Kind Astartes being a bit rarer makes them more significant

@AvatarKyber Not if you ignore the terrible trilogy and enjoy those good things in their own merit. Picking and choosing what you consider canon has been normal for decades of EU content and it’s the same now. Star Wars is anything you need it to be once you free your mind from Disney canon

While stories like Andor and Fallen Order ARE good what sucks is in the grand scheme of things… they don’t matter. Those stories won’t push the needle forward on Star Wars’ future cos they exist to fill gaps. The most story significant project is their biggest narrative failure

The Sietch of Sci-Fi |@TSoS_

There are FAR more good Star Wars projects than bad ones made under Disney and people falsely equate a decline in interest & viewership with a general narrative decline. Under Disney, we had Andor, Rogue One, Rebels, Maul: Shadow Lord, Clone Wars S7, Mando S1 &2 and countless novels & comics that were fantastic. There is far more to love than hate in this franchise.

The original Star Wars was over 30 years old when I first saw it as a child. It’s remained my favorite movie ever since. Your understanding of cinematic art is shallow and reductive. Beautiful things resonate with people across eras. Shakespeare is still discussed for a reason.
Stella@ubiquitousnewt

Your kids are unlikely to appreciate Lord of the Rings. The first film came out 25 years ago. Say you try to get them to watch it when they are 10, 5 years from now. Then it will be 30 years ago. When you were 10 years old, did you like films that were made 30 years ago?

@Whitedale_U @Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 The mind of the AI prompter is myopically focused on making a product exist as fast as possible because such people have no understanding or respect for the endlessly rewarding PROCESS of learning about your characters and yourself. Writing challenges you and changes you.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. I have ideas for movies all day long, but I don’t write stuff that I don’t think has potential/that I’m not willing to rewrite a gazillion times. Execution is everything, and even a good script can get muddied by production.

@Victory_Crowned @BercianShrine No, 10th edition Apocalypse is a set of optional rules to make 9000+ point games go a little smoother without actually improving balance. The last iteration of apocalypse was an entire different game system using 12-sided dice that was well-received by people who played it.

@Dgkalx1267 @OliverJia1014 Any moron could go “ChatGPT, write me a novel where it’s Hamlet but in a desert and there’s cool space ships and lazers and stuff” and let it spout nonsense. Frank Herbert had a vision for a story and painstakingly put it to paper. His vision mattered. A prompter’s ideas do not.

Couldn't disagree more. We are moving from being "builders" of sentences to being "architects" of systems. If the logic/idea is sound and the orchestration is precise, the output is anything but slop. The tool doesn't define the quality, the intent does. If you don't believe me, go read Pirsig. He spent an entire book explaining it.

I agree, but in capable hands Gen AI can actually help bridge the gap between good ideas and the paper. Some people have great ideas but just can't write. Other people have shit ideas and can. I've witnessed this all throughout my academic publishing career. Furthermore, using an AI to help you write can actually teach you how to write better. But yes, lots of people abusing the tech, agree there. I do think we need to move away from the idea that AI use automatically means you're not thinking, it's just lazy criticism.

@EaterOfBrushes No, it’s not. I just think it’s fair to ask the biggest tabletop game company in the world to balance their game correctly. Playing with friends is always fun but you also deserve a good experience on average when showing up to play at an LGS against someone you’ve never met

@0_zneR That game had such a good tone. The inconsistencies compared to other canon material are acceptable to me because they immerse you in the hellish POV of being a soldier in this conflict. The lack of funny nasal inflection in droid voices in favor of unsettling noise was perfect.

@The_Real_Stien @Clint_Davey1 to remain fun when lists are optimized. This is a result of player action, but it’s not their fault. The game SHOULD be balanced enough to stay fun when optimized, but 40K has never been balanced enough for that and people used to play more casually, which made it fun 2/2

@The_Real_Stien @Clint_Davey1 Purely from an objective rules-design perspective I think it was never good, but the important thing was the culture around it allowing those rules to still be fun. Modern sensibilities like copying tournament lists optimized the fun out of it, and it’s not balanced enough 1/2
