@thamoonman_ I don’t get why this conversation is even being had when we’re still part of the Commonwealth. If having the Union Jack on the flag is so “cucked” then not being independent is far worse. Changing the flag without even considering becoming a republic seems meaningless.

@whitesundesert @GaulishGroyper No one is naming their kid Lachlan to seem more Celtic idk what you’re talking about. It’s weird to even distinguish between English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish in our identities here since so many of us are a mix of all of the above. No one is denying they’re English lol.

@GaulishGroyper @talesroxy Australians are absolutely desperate to be seen as Celtic rather than English. Which is why so many of them are called Lachlan (in the 2025 Brumbies squad alone) even if they have 1 Scottish great grand parent and 7 who are from Essex.

Average American understanding of their history appears to be that they are descended from Scottish, Irish, and Italian settlers who withstood English attempts at conquest. To be fair this has overlap with popular conceptions of Australian identity.
