@textosmoontw Hi! I haven't been in Twitter in a very long time, and this is a once-off reply. Donegal Irish does contrast slender and broad /r/ the same way as other dialects, but sometimes people misspeak. Where things get messy are with broad and slender /l/ and the nasals.

Yep. The Irish my grandmother had was a transitional dialect between Mayo and Donegal Irish, and had aspects of both. That's what I picked up. And I've been called out aspects of that in both Cork and Dublin, in the latter case by someone who couldn't pronounce a slender 'r'. 🤨

Cad e mar ata tu? I opened with this when ordering in Irish in a pub on Inis Mór, bar staff made a face & answered sharply in English that she didn’t speak Ulster Irish/Ultach so there’s no point talking it to her. Knocks the confidence out of you. Anyone had similar experience?

Just in case anyone thinks this in a permanent thing, I'm only signing into Twitter after almost a year too respond to something much darker: a comment on thejournal.ie...

@devxvda I'm not sure there's much more that anyone can properly do. Some of the things that some assume people should do aren't necessarily feasible, mainly down to asymmetric empathy of various kinds. Everything I know you do is mentioned in that thread.

@MissusVee (Waves because of hell-year) I mean, you can head to a butchers, grind down a slice of bread, mash it into some steak mince, slice up some spuds, drizzle a bit of oil, and still... WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?! HOW DO YOU EAT?! DO YOU NOT HAVE AN OVEN OR GRILL?! INTERNET?!?!

@devxvda I mean, it amazes me that I have to state this, but you have nothing to worry about. You're sound, and sometimes we need to be reminded of that.

@mvandemar @KTrzeszczkowski @page_eco @btcfork Imagine it like this (and I'm lowballing this): you see a tiny square, and you need to give a _minimal_ description of that square. You're presented with an 8x8 bitmap that has a red line running down though the middle. That is you adjacency information. What do you do?

This is a black and white photograph. Only the lines have colour. What you “see” is what your 🧠 predicts the reality to be, given the imperfect information it gets.

@JJCelery Essentially! But the loop both generalises itself, and restricts itself. I mean, eventually everything becomes generalized abstract nonsense, but getting there is fun, and useful.

Oh, hi you! If you can understand calculus, you understand basic accounting. And if you can understand compound interest, you understand basic calculus. This shit isn't hard. Stop focusing on your metaphors.
