Former Arizona left-hander Garrett Irvin has placed himself on the voluntary retired list, bringing his four-year professional career in the Oakland Athletics organization to a close. Irvin was in the midst of an injury rehab assignment with the Athletics’ rookie-league team in Phoenix after starting the season at Single-A+ Lansing (Mich.) when he decided to retire. In late April, he was placed on the 7-day injured list and then the development list. He was sent to the rookie-league team for a rehab assignment June 6. He pitched well in three games with the rookie-league team, allowing one earned run in three innings (3.00 ERA) with three strikeouts and a walk. In his four-year career, he pitched in every minor-league classification, including one game with Triple-A Las Vegas in 2023, working one inning of scoreless relief before he was assigned back to Single-A Stockton (Calif.). The lefty was signed by Oakland as a free agent out of Arizona in 2022. As a senior that year, he went 5-4 and led the team's qualified pitchers with a 3.38 ERA. He earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention recognition. He struck out 71 batters and issued 29 walks while limiting opposing hitters to a .235 batting average. He pitched at Point Loma and Riverside CC before transferring to Arizona in 2020. He majored in Communications and English at Arizona. Want to wish @garrettirvin_ well on his future career pursuits and congratulate him on his fine baseball career.

Chip Hale is the right person to lead his alma mater. Give the man credit.
