@TweetAtAKK @niviksha @AlekhJindal @MoSarwat @adityagp @dorisjlee @me_dorx That's true, I'm yet to encounter queries performing pivot or unpivot operations in big data pipelines, including those that output unstructured data where the limitation of knowing schema in advance isn't an issue.

@tariquesdd @niviksha @AlekhJindal @MoSarwat @adityagp @dorisjlee @me_dorx Pivot kinda ops came from the spreadsheet world, for presentation/display purposes. I suspect most use cases for them in the DF world remain on analytics *outputs* for dissecting results (e.g., slice-level metrics, confusion matrices, etc.), not on large input datasets.

Time for a new SQL v DataFrame API (pandas, etc.) battle! 😇 Given recent tool trends, will SQL lose relevance for data scientists? 🤔 Poll time! Everyone doing data science roles in industry: Which one should folks wanting to enter data scientist roles prioritize for mastery?

@TweetAtAKK @MoSarwat Surprised to see not many votes for option C so far. DataFrame for ad hoc exploration (over small datasets on a single machine), SQL for prepared/mission-critical/large-scale dedicated tasks. Would love to hear from @adityagp, @dorisjlee, and @AlekhJindal what they think ...

@MoSarwat To provoke people to vote obvs. 😄 Yeah, SQL will not be "replaced" but it may get relegated to second priority in a non-trivial subset of data scientist roles as the profession/field expands. One size will not fit all, of course. 🤷‍♂️

@sarahcat21 Agree with the sentiment, but despite the strong appeal and the long line of technical results in AQP, it has yet to find a substantial footprint/adoption in data products and services... this paper talks about the challenges: microsoft.com/en-us/research…

Many decisions don’t require high precision insights; we shouldn’t shy from the quick and dirty in many contexts

I think the data community often misses the value of reports and analysis that is flawed but directionally correct

@sarahcat21 Indeed, the sessions are less focused w/ fewer/broader themes. That said, a few things that stand out to me include more emphasis on database tuning, many new benchmarks, a lot more papers on graphs & fewer papers on data exploration/prep. QP on modern HW remains under spotlight

For the first time ever, upon attending a DB research conference, I can’t discern any obvious research themes/tailwinds. There’s talks on everything from collaborative DS to new execution engines to graph algorithms and it’s totally unclear where interests are converging.

If you rank every major software innovation (OOP, containers, version control, deep learning, consensus algorithms, asymmetric encryption, whatever...) by the value it created, the relational database would come out at the top and it's not even close

@sarahcat21 Depends on the user, but not everyone needs to learn/master SQL. Machines are getting better at auto-generating expressive/complex SQL queries...

After hearing conflicting opinions some of which align with my experience I’m turning to tweeps: Is SQL hard to learn? Is it hard to master?

Before joining UofT, I will spend a year in industry at Microsoft Research, Redmond as a post-doc researcher in the data systems group.

After several wonderful years in the States, I will join the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor in Computer Science in Fall 2023. I am extremely excited about this new chapter of my life and looking forward to working with UofT colleagues and students!
