It's been a while since I got amazed by an AI product. Google's Live Translate just changed that.
I was playing poker yesterday in LA against six Chinese players. They start speaking Mandarin at the table. Casinos have English-only rules to prevent collusion, but I didn't want to be rude about it. I just needed to know they weren't talking about hands.
So I put my headphones on and launched Google Translate.
Duuude I was INSIDE the conversation and they were debating politics not poker. Just life stuff. The translation was almost real-time, like barely a second behind. But the craziest part is that when a man spoke, I heard a male voice matching his energy. When a woman spoke, the voice in my ear was female, matching HER vibe. It wasn't that robotic monotone translation I'm used to. It felt like someone was actually whispering the English version of each person into my ear, with the same emotion and everything.
I literally understood an entire conversation in a language I don't speak a single word of at a poker table. In real life. Not a demo.
And for the people who keep saying AI is a bubble, I don't know what to tell you anymore. This isn't some chatbot writing emails. This is real, tangible, life changing stuff happening right now in front of your eyes.
This is the most impressive thing Google has shipped lately. It's gonna connect people in ways we haven't even imagined yet.
I can't wait to travel to a new country and see how this changes everything. Speaking the local language has always been a struggle for me wherever I go, and now that problem just doesn't exist anymore.

@tayeb_ghazi

Our Senior Economist @tayeb_ghazi stated that #data on #migration trends in the #ECOWAS region reveals a pattern of continuous movement. Migration serves as a vector of both globalization & regionalization, as well as a driver of mobilization. It is not driven by economic complementarity, but rather by the #growth achieved by these economies.
