After 1 year of taking weekly improv classes, I’m performing in front of a real paying audience at @WinnipegFringe! Saturday, July 20th @ 8:15 pm at the Asper Center Theatre. And then I'll be directing lights at the 25th & 28th shows. Taking #improv classes has been one of the best things I've done in my adult life. I've made friends, have (almost) completely gotten rid of my stage fright, and have gotten a lot better at storytelling. Can't wait for Fringe!

In 2014 I had dinner with Nile Rodgers. And I had no idea who he was. 👀 I was 23 years old and at a Canadian Music Week gala dinner with a few colleagues from Warner Music Canada, the record label where I worked at the time. Somehow, I got a seat at the table. I remember how excited everyone was that he was going to be at the gala, but I was so busy and stressed earlier that day -- organizing everyone's CMW passes --that it slipped my mind to look him up. When we were all seated at the gala, I remember Nile smiling across the table at me. "Why are you so quiet?" he asked me. I probably responded with something offhand, but the real reason I was so quiet was that I was quickly picking up the importance of his presence, and had the sense to wait to talk until the time was right. Also so I didn't sound like a total idiot. Also that. Safe to say, I went home that night and immediately read his entire Wikipedia page. All the while berating myself for not knowing what everyone else was so excited about all along. I saw names like CHIC. Daft Punk. David Bowie. Diana Ross. Madonna. The list went on. Damn. A couple of months later, I saw CHIC at the Toronto amphitheater and they blew my mind. All to say, if I had a time machine, I'd have a way better conversation with Nile. But for now, there's this unreal NPR Tiny Desk Concert from October that's worth everyone's time. 👉 youtube.com/watch?v=pRERgc… I've watched it twice. PS - The blurry photo is *probably* from that awards show. I dunno.

📰 Are you a blogger or reporter who writes about travel, outdoors, or local regions of the USA? Travel Lemming just released our annual national park statistical rankings 📊- and our list is already generating a ton of buzz online! This week our rankings have been covered by dozens of outlets, including excellent articles in Time Out & Thrillist (links in next tweet). This story is easy to write and really gets people talking (and sharing) on social media. We'd love to help you cover it, or include it in a story you're already writing! 📆 National Parks Week starts tomorrow, so the timing for this story really is perfect. We put a lot of work into our data and there are literally hundreds of stories you could tell with it. You can find (much) more info and methodology at our site, but here's the short version: We ranked the parks across 7 factors: reviews, crowds, weather, affordability, accessibility, biodiversity, and (new to 2024) economic impact to gateway communities. 📈 Why did we do it this way? Well, in typical Travel Lemming style, we wanted to challenge conventions. We did NOT just want another "me too" list of the most beautiful or most famous national parks. 📈 So we took a look at the underlying historical & legislative reasons for even having national parks in the first place. ⚖️ And then we tried to come up with a system that would capture more than just subjective opinions (though that is part of our system too, via the reviews metric). The result is a ranking that really challenges what it means to be the "best" national park. 🏅 Our #1 national park -- for the second year running -- isn't Yellowstone. And it's not Yosemite. It's Shenandoah. Yep, Shenandoah. And the rest of the ranking is also filled with counterintuitive insights that superficially surprise people -- but that actually get you thinking when you really dig into it. In my opinion, the best national park is the one that you can actually go to. And it's also the one that is being managed sustainably for future generations. I think our list really reflects that. 📧 Anyway, if you're interested in covering the story - reach out to Travel Lemming's Marketing Director Taylor Herperger at taylor @ travellemming .com for a spreadsheet of data, quotes, images, anything else you need. Happy National Parks Week!🌲

what's something you read when you need to get your brain into "good writing" mode? Do you have authors you read immediately before you get to work in hopes that they'll rub off on you?
