𝘕𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘥𝘪 𝘈𝘻𝘪𝘬𝘪𝘸𝘦, 1949 The above represents some of the earliest expressions of ethnic chauvinism in Nigeria. Ethnic chauvinism is tribalism in its more extreme, superiority-driven form. Not merely “I support my people”, but the belief that one’s ethnic group is inherently superior, historically destined to lead, and more important than others. So Chichi, tribalism did NOT lead to the downfall of this country. It is ethnic chauvinism, constant finger-pointing, and the refusal of accountability wherever it appears that has done far more damage.

Do you remember Kelvin Ikeduba, the Yoruba actor who recently relocated abroad? A few days ago he shared what happened during his visit to Germany. He got on a bus where everyone else was white, and when he greeted people, no one responded. Eventually he spotted one other African guy, went to sit next to him, and greeted him too. But the guy completely ignored him and kept frowning the whole ride. So Kelvin stayed quiet for the rest of the trip. When they got to the bus stop, Kelvin realized the Nigerian guy was getting off at the same stop as him. Suddenly, about four white guys surrounded the Nigerian guy and started beating him up. Kelvin was standing right there. He chose not to step in because earlier the guy had been cold and dismissive when Kelvin tried to greet him. The people around seemed to expect Kelvin to help, and were surprised when he didn’t. Now Kelvin’s online asking if he did the right or wrong thing, because he feels bad about it afterward. What do you think—was he wrong to walk away?
