The amazing story of “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton A 17 year old Vanessa first created the now‑famous piano part in the summer of 1998 at her parents’ house in Philadelphia. Her mother listened to the riff and told her that it was a hit song. The young Vanessa struggled to turn it into a full song and set it aside for months. However, one day she decided to budge into the office Interscope Records mogul, Jimmy Iovine unannounced, and played her demo on his grand piano. Jimmy was sold and signed her on the spot but said to her, “You have to finish that.” Vanessa went back home, reworked it and titled the song “Interlude,” intending it as a short piano piece rather than a single. She was not happy with the team that was assigned to her. She went back to Jimmy’s office, and told him that she could work with those people. Interscope Records was on the verge of dropping her. As fate would have it, the Executive Producer Ron Fair heard the “Interlude”, and he was beside himself. He knew right away that Vanessa had a smash hit. He pushed to rework the arrangement, added orchestral strings, adjusted timing of the chorus, and against Vanessa’s initial hesitation “Interlude” was renamed “A Thousand Miles” before being released as the lead single from her 2002 debut album Be Not Nobody. It became a smash hit. The rest is history.
