Public blockchains made transparency the default.
That's great for verification.
Not so great when every payment, balance, and financial interaction becomes part of a permanent public record.
Today, I'd like to present ZPAY , A confidential payments application built with @Zama Fully Homomorphic Encryption, enabling private financial interactions on Ethereum.
ZPAY explores what Ethereum looks like when confidentiality becomes a first class feature. 🔒
Here's how it works:
>Shield
Instead of spending directly from a public wallet, users first shield ETH into a confidential vault. Once inside, funds are represented as an encrypted balance, allowing them to be used privately while remaining backed by real assets locked in the vault.
Think of it this way :
When a user shields ETH, the vault locks the deposited ETH and updates the user's confidential balance. In this prototype, the confidential balance demonstrates encrypted accounting using FHE. In a production implementation, the encrypted balance would be strictly pegged to the deposited ETH amount.
>Confidential Balance
Your balance isn't simply hidden by the UI , it remains encrypted until you authorize its decryption with your wallet. Even when opening the dashboard, nothing is revealed unless the owner explicitly chooses to view it.
>Private Payments
Sending funds feels familiar, but the accounting happens on encrypted balances. The result is a payment experience where users can transact without making every financial interaction trivially observable.
You may also ask question like , ‘How does the Confidential balance have value?’
The value comes from the ETH locked inside the vault. The encrypted balance represents the user's entitlement to those locked funds. In our prototype, we've focused on demonstrating confidential computation and transfers. A production version would enforce a one to one correspondence between the deposited ETH and the encrypted balance so the accounting is fully deterministic
>Unshield
Whenever users want to leave the confidential environment, they simply unshield their balance. The vault verifies the withdrawal through Zama's decryption workflow before releasing the corresponding ETH back to the user's wallet.
>Activity History
Privacy shouldn't come at the expense of usability. Every shield, transfer, and withdrawal is still recorded, giving users a clear timeline of activity while preserving confidentiality where it matters.
Financial privacy doesn't have to mean sacrificing security or verifiability. With Fully Homomorphic Encryption, ZPAY shows that encrypted balances can still be computed, updated, and transferred all without exposing the underlying values. Users keep control of their financial information while the network continues to enforce the rules.
This is only the first step. The same confidential infrastructure can power private payroll, business treasury management, confidential stablecoin payments, subscriptions, merchant checkout, and even perpetual trading bringing programmable privacy to everyday financial applications without asking users to leave Ethereum.
