Last night, a 22 year old man from Surrey, holding a Class 7 N driver’s licence, decided to visit Abbotsford—and apparently test our roadways like a racetrack. He was observed travelling 144 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone along Marshall Road near Queen Street.
An Abbotsford Police patrol officer spotted the excessive speed and conducted a traffic stop, quickly bringing the unofficial race to an end. The driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket, and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He also had to make alternative plans for getting back to Surrey.
So far this year, AbbyPD officers have removed 87 excessive speeders from Abbotsford roadways. Please slow down and help keep everyone safe. #RoadSafetyMatters

FYI, your press release is factually incorrect. Corporal Michael McLaughlin says "some electric vehicles have self-driving mode, but those systems are not legal to use in BC." This is not true. Tesla vehicles have Level 2 driver-assist software, which require driver attention at all times - this is still legal in B.C. What is illegal in B.C. is Level 3 and higher autonomous systems. As of April 5, 2024, the Motor Vehicle Act prohibits the use of Level 3, 4, and 5 self-driving vehicles on public roads, or even having a vehicle equipped with this capability, unless authorized by the province.
