We keep asking why people are leaving the hills. The real question is what is actually left for them to stay for?

As Char Dham Yatra 2026 begins, new developments from Uttarakhand temples have triggered a major discussion. Reports from Indian Express indicate that the Gangotri temple committee has introduced or is moving towards introducing Panchgavya consumption as an entry condition. Panchgavya traditionally includes milk, curd, ghee, cow urine and cow dung. The stated aim is to ensure that only those who follow Sanatan Dharma enter the shrine. There is an important nuance here. As per Economic Times reporting, non Hindus may be required to submit an affidavit declaring their faith in Sanatan Dharma before being allowed darshan. The committee has said such affidavits would be available at the temples, but the exact format is not publicly available. The key point is that these are temple committee level decisions and not government orders. The implementation details are still based on reported statements and there is no complete official document available in the public domain clarifying the exact scope.
