These are tough election results for Labour and I’m sorry to all of those colleagues who have lost their seats. Keir Starmer won a mandate to change our country. We must get on with delivering that mandate - and show how politics can improve people’s lives for the better.

We have uncovered a haphazard approach to the use of Advanced Practitioner (AP) roles by NHS trusts. Our investigation has revealed almost half of hospital trusts are using non-doctors to fill doctor rota gaps.   APs can play an important and valued role in patient care. But they should not be asked to substitute for doctors to address staffing gaps.   Patients shouldn’t have to worry about whether NHS managers have asked non-doctors to deliver care that only doctors can safely deliver. Nigel Farage said today on Richard Tice's unpaid tax: "If his accountants have made an error, he will put it right." This is on Tice. He is responsible for his company. He must pay what he owes and face the consequences.

It’s good news that the Strait of Hormuz has now reopened. This must be a long lasting and workable solution, without tolls or restrictions on routes. Today we announced our joint plan with France and other international partners to protect freedom of navigation. We need to see a return to peace and stability, and a permanent ceasefire.

@UKLabour We already pick up the bill through our taxes, an ever increasing bill due to NHS inneficiency and union objections to change. The private sector uses less staff than the NHS for most proceedures and does not have over 50% of staff who are not front line. Privatise NHS now

Resident doctors, you've joined the picket lines, shown unity and perseverance throughout the past six days of strikes. The Government knows where we stand, and they know our door is open for further talks. We need an offer that addresses jobs and pay. We’re ready to work together for lasting change. Well done again for standing firm and fighting for your worth.

We’re investing more in the NHS and delivering differently. I'm investing £237 million in 36 new and improved Community Diagnostic Centres. This means shorter waits for tests and scans closer to home, more convenient services, and more footfall to our high streets.

@wesstreeting So still a higher approval rating than you or your Government. Waiting lists are over 6 million and you've cut 1000 consultant and GP training posts out of spite. The public want someone who can fix the health service, not someone using it as a stepping stone to their PM run.

The BMA think their demands are more important than patients. Unsurprisingly, patients don't agree. Patients deserve better. The BMA must call off these strikes.

Ratcliffe is incoherent - all of the oil and gas we produce here in Britain is sold at the global market price. No amount of oil produced here can in that case save us a single penny. Importing fossil fuels does not mean we pay more. Drilling in the north sea will take years to deliver globally priced fossil fuels and Rosebank will cost nearly £3 Bn in tax payer subsidies to it’s Norwegian owners - and….none of the oil will land here in Britain. So what sense is Ratcliffe making here, other than to shareholders in Rosebank and other oil companies. This is another fossil fuel crisis and we can’t solve it or help ourselves at all - by pouring more oil onto it. telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/…

Imagine qualifying as a doctor in the UK, only to be told there is no NHS training job for you in your home country. That is the reality facing thousands of UK medical graduates. The taxpayer invests in medical education. Medical graduates complete a five to six year demanding medical degree, graduate with debts often exceeding £100,000, and commit themselves to serving patients in the NHS. Yet in 2025, more than 40,000 applicants applied for just 10,000 specialty training jobs. Some doctors end up unemployed because they cannot find jobs as fully qualified doctors. These training posts are not optional extras. They are the route to becoming the specialist Consultants and GPs our NHS depends on. Without them, doctors cannot progress in their careers and patients ultimately lose future specialists. Yet UK medical graduates are not being prioritised for these NHS training jobs. Prioritising UK medical graduates for speciality training jobs is coherent workforce planning. At the same time, there must be safeguards for international doctors with significant NHS experience who are already contributing to patient care. Right now, the system satisfies no one. It creates unemployment, fuels insecurity, and weakens the future medical workforce. That is not sustainable and it must change.

Rachel Reeves continues to work her magic: Job vacancies in Britain fall to their lowest level in five years as businesses freeze graduate recruitment amid rising national insurance and other labour costs.  The number of advertised roles dropped to under 700,000 in January, down 16 per cent year on year, the first time since January 2021 that vacancies have slipped below that level, meaning numbers being hired now only marginally above pandemic-era lows.
