Jason Collins was a great teammate, elite defender, strong, charismatic, and yes, very brave man. When he made the decision to come out, he handled it with honesty and purpose, embracing his role as both an NBA player and a role model. In DC, he’s forever honored at the Smithsonian NMAAHC where his 2014 Nets jersey stands as a powerful symbol of courage, authenticity, and progress in sports and society.. RIP “Twin”...you were your own man.

RIP Ted Turner — to many tech, media, and communications leaders… a true hero of heroes. I launched a private satellite network in 1986 and met Ted Turner in his offices in Atlanta. He was generous with his time, mentoring, and advice. He was daring, brave, and a one-of-a-kind personality — a fiercely competitive leader. He told me, “Stop planning and talking about it and just launch the damn thing.” When I purchased the Capitals and the Wizards, we talked about team ownership, as he owned the Braves and Hawks. We also talked about RSNs, and when AOL acquired Time Warner, we laughed about Jonah swallowing the whale — and how miserable we’d be as middle managers in a slow-moving, gigantic media company. Shortly after 9/11, when Michael Jordan decided to play for the Wizards, Ted said, “Good for the NBA, good for the Wizards, good for Turner Sports, and good for Michael — he’s too damn young to retire. Matter of fact, I’m too young to retire — put me in, coach!” This was at an AOL Time Warner board meeting. Ted Turner was a visionary — a swashbuckling, risk-taking, larger-than-life figure who could suck all the air out of a room. I loved and respected him. He will be missed.

April captured the momentum building across @MSE and DC. I welcomed the next generation of @WashMystics talent at the @WNBA Draft, marking an exciting moment for DC sports and a clear sign of the league’s continued growth. In our communities, we launched EquipHER, a District of Play initiative to help keep DC girls in sports by providing essential athletic gear. We also welcomed the Hoop Culture Capital Classic – a premier high school basketball showcase – back to @CapitalOneArena. I also spent time with global leaders at the @semafor World Economy Summit and joined local leaders at @Bisnow’s State of the Market DC to talk about how entertainment districts like @CapitalOneArena support local businesses and will help drive a more vibrant Downtown DC. I’m energized by all we’ve accomplished. More ahead! ☀️

Today is our 30th anniversary of @JunksRadio. It all started during the “New Sports Weekend” on 106.7-FM on May 4, 1996.

If you’ve been near Capital One Arena lately, you’ve seen it—this transformation is no longer behind the scenes. We’re now seeing the renovated exterior take shape in real time, with the building’s outer shell coming down and scaffolding in place. Underneath the bones of a new façade, main entrance, wider concourse and upgraded fan amenities are beginning to take shape. It’s all about elevating the fan experience from the moment you arrive—more welcoming, more seamless, more connected. Big progress for Downtown DC and the local businesses that power it. Excited for what’s ahead.
