A client recently shared something that honestly got me thinking. He got a job as a driver with a ₦70k salary. At first, everything was normal pick up, drop off, stay on standby. No issues. Gradually, new responsibilities started entering the job description without any conversation. Things like help me quickly wash the cars. Go to the market and get a few things. Kindly sweep the compound as well as help me pick beans etc. It didn’t stop there, he now washes his boss’s clothes by hand and irons them too. Sometimes he even helps them around the house like a full domestic staff. Before he knew it, his daily routine turned into: Driver, Errand runner, Cleaner, Gardener, and Laundry guy. Some days, he’s going to different markets like he’s running a logistics company. The crâzy part? Salary still the same ₦70k. Now he’s asking at what point does “helping out” turn into being taken advantage of? He’s considering asking for ₦250k since the job is no longer just driving. But he’s also wondering. If his boss says no, is there any legal ground to demand payment for all the extra work he has already done? Or is this just one of those situations where you either endure it or quietly walk away? Be honest, is he asking for too much or just finally waking up?
