Here’s what they don’t tell you about buying a house: 1. The higher the deposit, the better the monthly installment but also that deposit is gone forever defaulting is not going to bring it back unlike rent. 2. Sectional titles have levies, stand-alones are ridiculously expensive and both have unavoidable monthly rates/taxes you have to pay for the rest of your life. 3. Owning property is committing yourself to a life long battle against moisture, repairs, dilapidation other potential disasters waiting to happen. You need to save for that. 4. You pay for buying and pay for selling through transfer costs, attorneys and taxes, you can’t just pack up and leave. 5. A 20 year bond/mortgage through the bank is no joke. You have to keep up with that aggressively but also save something for any major life change because once you default, all that money is gone. Lastly, a R9500 rent is relatively crazy but things like location and access need consideration. There are cheaper areas you can choose but they also come with their challenges. Life is about picking a struggle you’re willing to handle. Owning a home may seem like a headache but others are okay with that as opposed to giving money to someone who can change their mind at any moment.
