I’m genuinely tired of the “Dubai has no culture” take. First, Dubai has its own. Pearl diving, Bedouin traditions, a history shaped by the sea, the desert and trade routes with Persia. Most visitors never bother to look for it. It’s not Rome. It’s not Paris. But it’s there.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Second, culture isn’t ancient by nature. It just feels that way once it’s fully formed. New York in the 1930s was a city of strangers. Expats, immigrants, people who didn’t belong anywhere else, who came with nothing and were building everything from scratch. There was no “authentic New York culture”, just ambitious people side by side, meeting and creating. That became the culture. Dubai is the same experiment running right now, with 200 nationalities in the mix instead of 20. Everyone’s building the culture together — even the soulless influencers and the crypto bros.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Dubai (also Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, etc.) they’re New York in the 1930s. A blank canvas where culture is still being made.

Back in Abu Dhabi. Full Etihad flight from Phuket. apparently yesterday flight was also overbooked Easy peasy disembarkation and exit from Abu Dhabi airport What a lovely quick Eid vacation!

@teovito You're right, didn't know they all had different names. I've only been a couple of times and thought the whole area was called Kite beach.

Thought we'd take advantage that "everyone's left Dubai" to go to Kite Beach. Still couldn't get a parking spot near the beach. In fact, I saw two guys get into a pushing fight over a parking spot.

Got home from my run at 7am this morning Opened the door 8 year old dancing on the couch, music blaring 2 year old absolutely sending it round the living room on her bike Beyond grateful for a house full of chaos. Life is good

Dubai feels normal today, but 'normal' has permanently shifted. We're all just slightly more aware that everything can change overnight. That awareness makes you either paralyzed or more robust.
