Picking up the pieces. No woman should die giving birth in Ireland in 2025 ! Too many do- and the HSE needs to take their deaths seriously.

@FergalBowers @rtenews Thanks for being one of the few journalists to mention the health committee discussion. It’s worth noting that maternal deaths and Savita wasn’t mentioned once by the committee members

@Archidub1 @Archidub1 Celebrating a planning refusal that keeps critically ill mothers travelling to Drogheda isn't the architectural victory you frame it as. It’s a failure of priorities.

I welcome the decision to strike down permission for a substandard block which would have further damaged one of our finest architectural set pieces and eat-into what was intended as a public green park.

An Coimisiún Pleanála has struck down plans for a €100 million extension of the Rotunda Hospital to care for critically ill women and infants as the building would cause irreparable damage to the character of Parnell Square. irishtimes.com/business/2026/…

@griptmedia Whilst it is possible that the dysfunctional housing market is a major coarse of the skills drain, an important additional issue is that many are reluctant to compromise their morals and ethics to work in an Irish system that rewards poor performance and hides mistakes

NIAMH UÍ BHRIAIN on 7,000 Irish medics now working in Australia. No functioning society should be relying so heavily on foreign healthcare workers because so many of our own are being driven abroad - by factors often exacerbated by immigration. gript.ie/7000-reasons-w…

@catherineroyuk Terribly tragic story. However, the Irish media is all too quick to try and blame women for wanting to give birth at home. Irish maternity units are unpleasant places- poor facilities and overcrowded

@BirthTrauma @Lucy_Osborne @sirin_kale It’s still worth mentioning that most women who die in childbirth due in maternity hospitals. The only reasons that women are attracted to the idea of “free birthing” is that maternity services are very poor in places.

@rtenews This heartbreaking case underscores ongoing challenges in Irish maternity care. With problems in maternity units such as overcrowding, lack of staff and non adherence to protocols- it’s not surprising many women opt for home births.

The September 2025 Maternal Death Enquiry Ireland data brief reported a maternal mortality rate of 9.0 per 100,000 maternities (covering 2021–2023), which is higher than many comparable countries and points to ongoing maternity safety concerns.

@rtenews But how many of those reports will actually be published by the HSE or DOH ? The lot of a health journalist @FergalBowers in Ireland must be intensely frustrating

🇮🇪 In 1987, Ireland had around 2,100 maternity beds - more than double today’s ~1,000. Back then, mums stayed 5–7 days; now it’s 2–3. Fewer beds, shorter stays despite the fact mums are older with more medical co-morbidity
