My name is Terry Bowtle. I am 36 years old, and I am speaking out because I was failed—not just by my stepfather who abused me, but by the institutions that were meant to protect me. As a child growing up in the UK, I endured years of emotional, physical, sexual abuse and neglect. My stepfather, Bernard Bowtle, subjected me to violence, starvation, and humiliation. I was forced to make his breakfast at 6 a.m. every morning. He beat me with slippers. He shoved my head into the toilet and flushed it. I was denied food and water I was unloved and unwanted. But the worst betrayal came from the system. Social services knew. Teachers knew. Neighbours knew. It was an open secret and yet no one intervened. No one helped me. I was left to suffer in silence while the system turned its back. Today, I live with the consequences of that trauma. I carry the scars of a childhood stolen from me. I struggle with mental health. But I am not staying silent. I am speaking out to demand accountability. I want justice—not just for myself, but for every child who has been ignored, dismissed, or abandoned by the very institutions meant to protect them

I hear you, I believe you, and I'm sorry that happened to you, but please understand that if you try to hold this system accountable, it will attack you, and villify you, in order to isolate you so that no one else will join with you to demand justice. This system isn't designed to care for people. You made the mistake of expecting that from them. They only wear the face of the protector to make it seem like they're protecting people when they're really waging war on someone. They're nobody's help. I'm sorry.
