Ye built the haunting synth chords and pulsing 808s with Mike Dean and Jeff Bhasker, layering his Auto-Tuned vocals raw and late at night after the breakup with Alexis Phifer. The iconic string swell (played by Larry Gold’s orchestra) was added in L.A., turning a sparse demo into the album’s most melancholic closer in under two weeks.
