I am finally ready to share what I have been working on for Burning Man 2024. It is perhaps not super “fnnch”, but it is what I am inspired to build. What’s the point of being an artist if you’re not going to push yourself? I call the piece Solar Bridge. I have never seen a sculpture at Burning Man that incorporates solar into the artwork itself. The panels are usually just a basic array off to the side. I was thus inspired to build a self-contained piece that has power generation, storage, and consumption all within its bounds. An artwork that can be placed in any field and run autonomously for months or years. While incorporating solar into a sculpture is not novel, it is under-explored, and I have not seen it at Burning Man before. I considered many possible manifestations of this idea and eventually settled on an arch. It will be 13’ tall, 26’ wide and 4’ deep. The exterior is solar panels. The interior glows at night. The "bridge" part of Solar Bridge is a metaphoric. It is not a literal bridge. Please do not climb it. It is intended to be a bridge to a future in which energy generation and consumption live increasingly in harmony. More soon!
