Every year I see people complain that "@TwitchCon Isn't worth it"... here's my thoughts and attempt to manage expectations! First and foremost, TC is an opportunity to connect with the community and meet the amazing friends you've met online IRL, solidify those friendships, make new friends, share stories and experiences with people who understand this world and motivate, inspire and ignite your passion for content creation when you get home! ^ THIS is my goal, expectations and experience and I look forward to it every year... If you go in thinking that you're going to walk out with new brand deals, opportunities or partnerships, you may be bitterly dissapointed... Manage your expectations! I've seen a few posts over the years claiming that vendors don't care unless you have a partner badge and will basically ignore you otherwise... IN MY EXPERIENCE, vendors are just as nervous and awkward as the majority of creators there and basically looking for positive engagement or spotting someone they actually know/worked with before so they have someone to latch on to! Also, bare in mind, all vendors are there to push a product. The vast majority have no scope or ability to set up partnerships/campaigns... SO, aim to be confident, carry the conversation, be engaging and make it your goal to get their contact details so you can reach out after the event, make a genuine connection after all the madness and potentially work together in future. There's a lot of rhetoric that it's all about the partners and they're treated like gods... Bubble burst time, partner is step one. Partners get access to the partner lounge, a hand full of talks, and a partner party. What's not known to most is there's invite only mixers with brands, all of which happen outside of the con that simply 'having partner' will not get you access too... This (like much of life) is about who you know and what you've accomplished. There is also an invite only 2nd Partner Party, meetings, round tables that THE VAST MAJORITY of Partners have no access too... This year was the 1st time I was invited to these after 5 years of attending and had no idea they existed... I'm sure there's another 'level' I'm un-aware off but I'm incredibly grateful I made it THIS far haha You may think a lot of this sounds unfair and shouldn't be gated, and you might not like it, but that's business, that's life. These brand mixers etc cost the brand big bucks and they want to connect with the top folks who will bring the best ROI... This is why I say manage expectations, go for the reasons I made at the start, build your brand, learn, expand your network, get motivated! I could talk for hours on this and I'm only posting because I get a bit of second hand frustration when I see people coming home deflated and posting about their disappointment when it could have been such a positive for their journey in content creation! Don't expect, make the most of it, HAVE FUN! Happy to chat in comments!
