My first one million naira came from crypto. I started crypto around 2018/2019. That was about a year after I graduated from secondary school. At that time, I was still new to real life. I had never earned my first salary as a young man. Later in 2018, I started working at a tarpaulin company. One evening after work, a friend introduced me to Ethereum. There was a referral program where you could earn some Ethereum. At that time, one $ETH was around ₦17k to ₦35k (I don’t remember the exact price). As a young guy without a phone, and with the mindset of wanting to impress girls, I was saving to buy an iPhone 7 which cost over ₦100k. My friend advised me to buy Ethereum first, but I didn’t listen. Two to three weeks later, while we were talking one evening, he mentioned that Ethereum had risen to about ₦75k. I still ignored it because I had seen people lose money in Ponzi schemes like MMM and others. A week later, on my way back from work, he told me again, for the last time, to buy Ethereum with the money I had saved for a phone. I had about ₦80k at that time. This time, I decided to give it a try. By September 2019/2020, I checked again and saw that Ethereum had risen to ₦175k. I was shocked. I told my elder brother, but he warned me it might be a scam. Still, I went ahead and bought $XRP with ₦20k (about 333 coins). After two weeks, it grew to ₦75k. I was amazed. That gave me confidence, so I went all in. I added another ₦50k and bought more $XRP, some $ETH, $BTC, and 1 $LTC using Luno app. During the bull run in 2022, my portfolio grew to about ₦1.78 million. I was in my first year (100 level) then. The funny part is that it was my best friend who reminded me to check it, because I had planned to leave it untouched until 2025, thinking it would be worth hundreds of millions by then. The sad part is that I didn’t take profit because I didn’t understand how the market works. I thought the price would keep going up forever, but it didn’t. I remember clearly telling one of my bosses to buy $BTC when it was around ₦1.553 million, but he believed it was a scam like MMM. Some of my coworkers who bought made good money. The rest, as they say, is history.
