The conservative judges generally make rulings based on the content of the law.
The three left-wing judges make many rulings based on their ideology or what they think the law ought to say. For example, that abortion must be allowed, even though this is not written anywhere.
These approaches naturally clash, and that is enough to create a split along the lines we observe.

This idea has not been lost. It is more well than for a long time, among the conservative judges.
Also, it's not true that every ruling is 5-4. Many are 6-3 (the three left-wing ideologues vs the rest), and even the most disagreeing pair of judges agree more than 60% of the time.
