Building a permanent base on the moon means moving a massive amount of dirt. Companies like Caterpillar and Komatsu have been thinking about this for decades. Designing lunar excavators and other dirt moving equipment comes down to a few hard constraints: 1️⃣ 1/6th Earth gravity - on Earth machines rely on their own weight to operate, on the moon everything weighs far less 2️⃣ No oxygen - diesel engines won't work, everything must be electrified or rely on different power systems 3️⃣ Extreme temperatures ranging from -170°C to +110°C will require engineering systems with far greater tolerance than what's required on Earth
