1. The city can move very quickly when it wants to. 2. Spending money to name things and then spending money to rename them is not sound financial policy. 3. If there's money for new signage, there's money to clear brush in the canyons ahead of wildfire season.

I signed an executive order to remove Cesar Chavez’s name and likeness from City assets, launch a community process in #BarrioLogan to rename Cesar Chavez Parkway, and establish March 31 as Farmworkers Day. We will honor the broader legacy of the farmworker and Chicano movements.

Despite a ridership decline, #MTS income is stable due to increased sales tax revenue. "The bad news on passenger revenue is mostly canceled out by good news on interest earnings and sales tax revenue, which are several million dollars over projections." #SANDAG could contribute even more revenue to the bus and trolley system if it reduced the number of multi-million $ studies churned out each year. #SanDiego government agencies don't have a revenue problem, they have a spending problem. sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/03/19/few…

The #SanDiego Rules Committee advanced four proposed ballot measures at its March 18 meeting. One of the measures is a tax hike that "aims to increase San Diego’s hotel tax revenue, but at the expense of online travel companies like Expedia instead of at the expense of tourists. The measure, which was the least specific of the four endorsed Wednesday, would reclassify online travel companies as hotel operators to increase how much of their hotel transactions would be subject to the city’s hotel tax, formally known as a transient-occupancy tax. The measure would also apply hotel taxes to all charges, including resort fees, cleaning fees and in-room movie purchases — charges not currently subject to hotel tax." A proposed ride-share tax was rejected. Other measures advanced included: - fiscal accountability and transparency reform - changes to campaign finance and ethics laws - free parking at the beaches and bays The four measures will be further considered by the full Council for approval before they are placed on a ballot. sandiego.hylandcloud.com/211agendaonlin… sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/03/18/bea…

The political establishment is not content mismanaging transportation, water/sewer, and storm drain infrastructure. Regulations that are excessive at best and in all probability counter-production are placing California's energy infrastructure at risk.

@jim_desmond We may also see a City of San Diego 'large-portfolio home ownership speculation tax' and ride share tax, and a Santee sales tax hike.

They want to tax you when you buy groceries. Tax you when you sell your home. Tax you through your paycheck. Tax your water. Tax your trash. Tax you for parking at Balboa Park. 9+ new taxes and fee increases between the county and the City of San Diego — and they're not done yet. This isn't government. It's a shakedown.

The #SanDiego county supervisors will vote on establishing a 'County Consumer Fairness & Public Protection (CFFP) Unit' at its March 24 meeting. If established, the CFFP unit would be staffed with up to 30 positions within two years of Board authorization. The new unit would add to the number of local consumer protection agencies and organizations, including the District Attorney’s Office, various state agencies, city attorneys, legal aid organizations, and community groups. sdcounty.legistar.com/LegislationDet…

The #SanDiego Rules Committee will vote today on approving a several measures on the November 2026 ballot. One measure are campaign reforms proposed by Council Member Sean Elo-Rivera. A slide deck outlining the intent of the measure has been posted, but its specifics have yet to be developed. sandiego.hylandcloud.com/211agendaonlin…

@sdcta Preliminary information is available for the ballot measures proposed by council members (free beach parking, and fiscal accountability). There is no such detail available for CM El-Rivera's measure to 'reform' campaign finance.

The #SanDiego Rules Committee will consider eight ballot measures at its March 18 meeting. One of the proposed ballot measures would “advance fiscal accountability and transparency reform” and “give the City Council more control over budget cuts and to set minimum funding levels for oversight agencies like the city auditor and Ethics Commission.” Since the final text has not been determined, it’s too early to tell if the ballot measure should be supported, but it does at least have the potential to improve city governance. sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/03/16/san… Three additional ballot measures (including a “large-portfolio homeownership speculation tax”) will be considered at the April 22 Rules Committee meeting. An empty homes tax has already been approved for June. The June and November 2026 elections will have many consequential ballot measures and voters are well advised to track their progress.

@sdcta An additional downside of the Empty Homes Tax is the enforcement bureaucracy the city could impose to crack down on tax avoidance, placing all homeowners at risk.

The SDCTA also opposed the #SanDiego Empty Homes Tax, citing concerns about the "legality of the tax and high levels of uncertainty about its potential benefits, ambiguity about whether tax dollars will be used to tackle the City’s ongoing structural challenges, as well as the lack of a Sunset Clause, which is a threat to long-term fiscal accountability." sdcta.org/policy-reports… sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/03/17/san…

Fear Is Their Favorite Tax Strategy "If we don't raise taxes, bridges will collapse. Hospitals will close. Crime will skyrocket." Funny how the threat is always to YOUR safety — never to their pet projects, their bonuses, or their bloated budgets. They manufacture a crisis, then sell you the "solution": more taxes. Real leaders find savings. Real leaders prioritize. Real leaders don't govern by fear. Demand better.

The truth is that while #SanDiego has taken limited steps to control spending in the current budget cycle, expenditures have grown substantially over the past four years due to staffing increases and pay raises. youtube.com/watch?v=IpXZsI…
