Start niche but think in scale. One idea from a YC podcast resonated with me recently. Start with an idea space. Looking back, that's exactly what happened to me while building an app, almost by accident. I often read and hear that startups should begin with a niche market to avoid competing directly with larger companies that have more resources, both technically and commercially. Definitely agree on that. The harder question is: is the niche worth pursuing? Sometimes we can't even see the niche in the first place. So how to find one? My current view is to start with idea space we are comfortable with. A category of market or technology that we already understand or willing to spend time understanding it. From there, go deeper and look for opportunities with high impact problems, in terms of recurrence and pain. At one point, I started to with a very big idea, only to realize that both the technology and the market were too difficult for me to tackle. Fortunately, the idea space itself was broad enough that I could keep exploring other opportunities. The core technical architecture stays the same while the use cases evolved. That flexibility allowed me to pivot multiple times without starting from scratch. Even when a specific niche don't work out, I still believe the broader market opportunity was worth pursuing. TLDR: Find Idea Space -> Find Niche -> Pivot -> Find doable Niche.
