This article is misleading and factually incorrect. At a press conference on January 16, which The Tyee was invited to attend, Vancouver Police provided a comprehensive update on hate-crime trends across the city. The update coincided with the 100-day mark of the Israel-Hamas war, and the timing was in response to requests from media for information about hate crimes targeting the Muslim and Jewish communities since the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks on Israel. Although the troubling rise in anti-Semitism was a focus, we also provided information about how hate crimes have impacted other identifiable groups in our community. We specifically spoke about increases in incidents targeting the 2SLGBTQ+ and South Asian communities, and how hate-incidents against other identifiable groups may not be reflected in police statistics due to under-reporting. We took time to answer questions from the media, and were careful to provide important context. For a more complete and balanced perspective on this issue, please watch the full press conference, which has been available online since January 16: m.youtube.com/watch?v=WRSJLn… You will find our January 16 press release here: bit.ly/4aXkUZm
