Great coverage here from @thatemfagan on some of the concerns with the province's EV program, which one researcher says is a "very expensive way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." The federal EV rebate program was scrapped in January. #bcpoli cbc.ca/news/canada/br…

Now that BC's carbon tax has been scrapped, Premier David Eby warns there could be cuts to the Clean BC program. The EV rebate program could be first on the chopping block. Some analysts say it's a flawed program. #bcpoli cbc.ca/player/play/vi…

I wrote about the hypocrisy underlying our national conversation around housing. People & politicians blame immigrants for unaffordable housing (ignoring the real causes), then quietly rely on immigrants to fill the most precarious, low-paying jobs to build our housing supply.
The Local Magazine (Archived Account)@TheLocal_TO

When the feds cut immigration in 2024, they said it would ease the strain on housing stock. In reality, the construction sector is increasingly reliant on immigrants to build tomorrow’s housing—a fact that's been ignored in public discourse, says @royinori.thelocal.to/construction-l…

As a journalist, you usually want to be writing the news, not the subject of it. But I think this is a nice exception. Honoured to have won a Nathan Cohen Award for Critical Excellence. I share this with my colleagues and editors @TorontoStar: thestar.com/entertainment/…

Closing my work computer for the next week, and will be returning as a full-time culture reporter with the Toronto Star in the new year. Rest assured, I will continue to tweet out nonsense in this new role, but will do so while wearing finely-pressed Oxford button down shirts.

According to the @NewYorker, the Globe and Mail knew that Alice Munro’s husband had sexually abused her daughter in 2010. They even pulled the court records then buried the story.

VPD had the opportunity to respond to The Tyee's questions, first through an interview request and then via emailed questions — standard media accountability. Instead, they waited for the article to publish and then post this misleading statement.
Vancouver Police@VancouverPD

This article is misleading and factually incorrect. At a press conference on January 16, which The Tyee was invited to attend, Vancouver Police provided a comprehensive update on hate-crime trends across the city. The update coincided with the 100-day mark of the Israel-Hamas war, and the timing was in response to requests from media for information about hate crimes targeting the Muslim and Jewish communities since the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks on Israel. Although the troubling rise in anti-Semitism was a focus, we also provided information about how hate crimes have impacted other identifiable groups in our community. We specifically spoke about increases in incidents targeting the 2SLGBTQ+ and South Asian communities, and how hate-incidents against other identifiable groups may not be reflected in police statistics due to under-reporting. We took time to answer questions from the media, and were careful to provide important context. For a more complete and balanced perspective on this issue, please watch the full press conference, which has been available online since January 16: m.youtube.com/watch?v=WRSJLn… You will find our January 16 press release here: bit.ly/4aXkUZm
