@USN_Submariner Before Mare Island was closed, there was a Wahoo St. up near the BOQ. The "new" (1960s) housing area had many streets named after ships built at the yard. All gone now :(.

OTD in 1942, USS Wahoo (SS-238) was commissioned.
Her CO, LCDR Dudley “Mush” Morton, gave the following speech prior to the Gato-class submarine's 3rd War Patrol:
"Wahoo is expendable. We will take every reasonable precaution, but our mission is to sink enemy shipping. If anyone doesn't want to go along under these conditions, just see the yeoman. Nothing will ever be said about your remaining in Brisbane."
*Every single crew member went on that patrol.
Wahoo was lost with all hands in 1943 on her 7th war patrol, with LCDR Morton in command. At the time she was lost, Wahoo had sunk more ships than any other US Navy submarine.

Is it wrong that my only big aspiration for 2026 is paying off my mortgage? Like, sure, publishing more books would be cool. Getting a retirement approved would be awesome. But not having a financial anchor around my neck that drives all monetary decisions?

@cdrsalamander European museums were a revelation - very few items roped off, or in glass cases. I could examine an object as closely as I liked, as long as I didn't touch it. (TBH: our folks taught us to only look, not touch).

@lawofsea One of my friends added a pulsing third brake light to his Sunbeam Alpine. Looks good, and it really keeps the person behind you at a distance. (I added one to my Harley and loved how people gave me space).

@lawofsea The failure was fascinating. Housing looked fine at first, but you could break off pieces with your hand, and then crumble it. NOS replacement was several thousand; fortunately they found a serviceable used one.

My 944 had running problems that varied; no pattern. Finally took it to the shop, where they found the magnesium distributor housing was literally held together by the paint on it. Galvanic corrosion.

Thresher's loss hit the nation hard, the submarine community even more so.
