A recent field day at Brookstead, QLD, showcased how strip tillage and fertiliser management can lift sorghum establishment and productivity. 🌾Best results came from strip tilling straight after harvest rather than delaying until later. 🌾Slower planting speeds also showed a trend towards more even emergence. Native earwig species (example below) = not known to damage crops, beneficial, feed on organic matter, some eat pests, usually solitary. European earwigs (picture by @DPIRDbroadacre below) = introduced pest, damage crops (esp. seedlings), common under stubble, often found in groups.

Four trial sites have been established on farms in the Esperance Port Zone to evaluate different nitrogen decision-making systems and the potential of nitrogen banking to improve farm profitability and soil health. The @SEPWA_ag trials began in 2024 with on-farm sites at Cascade, Grass Patch, Scaddan and Beaumont. All sites are situated on shallow duplex soils and treatments are replicated 3 times at each site.
