I've said some pretty uncomplimentary things about @SuellaBraverman in the past, but I won't add to them today. We had a very pleasant 'Clear the Air' lunch a year ago in which she said told me she was in the Tory Party to stay. Hey ho. A defection is never good news for the departing party, but I wonder whether the Tories can paint these departures as a positive, in that they can really start afresh - a sort of Clean House approach, to coin a phrase from the US. I've always thought the May 2026 local elections would be a Ground Zero moment, and these defections add to the sense that a new beginning for the Tories is approaching. The launch of 'Prosper' today is a sign that there are 7 million centrist and centre right voters out there up for grabs. They need to be reeled in. And meanwhile, Reform can continue to burnish its reputation as a retirement home for ex Tory failed politicians.
