There is a place in America where four roads meet, and every driver must decide, in silence, who is worthy to go first. You have sat at one of these. You know the moment I mean. The small nod. The little wave. The silent question of who defers to whom. I have trained my whole life for exactly this moment. In my country, to go before another is to claim you are greater than them. Only a fool, or a lord, moves first. A person of honor always yields. Always. So I arrived at the crossing. Three other carriages were there. I raised my hand to the driver on my right. After you. I did not move. I would not be the second-most-honorable man at that crossing. I would be the first. Which meant going last. I yielded to every car that came. Then every car after that. A officer of the road eventually approached my window. He asked if my vehicle had broken down. I told him no. I told him I was winning. He asked me how long I had been there. I told him the truth. The sun had been high when I arrived. It was no longer high. So explain it to me plainly. At the crossing of four roads, the most honorable man yields to all others. Then how does the most honorable man ever get home?
