@ckaleiki Being a streamer isnt glamorous- its insane sacrifice, hard work and stress with a slim chance of success. Yup thought process about tracks 🤣 Kevin Hart said it best "everyone want to be famous. Nobody wants to work for it"

Is it just me or is "I want to be a startup founder" becoming the new "I want to be a streamer" for teenage boys. Being a founder isn't glamorous - its insane sacrifice, hard work and stress with a slim chance at success. Or at least that's been my experience 🙃

Damn this post did numbers. Just to clarify, Legacy: Steel & Sorcery (the game in the SS) is in early access as a PvPvE World PvP/Extraction game. However, Notorious vision is to bring Legacy to an MMO over time. We're adding a new social Hub in our next patch (shown in the SS) that gives that MMO feeling to the game. Excited for the future! TLDR: No MMO yet, but workin' on it 😅 Check out Legacy here: store.steampowered.com/app/2344320/Le… New Patch next week!

@ckaleiki @PlayLegacyGG specific to Tarkov I think at the beginning the economy was soooo good. When they started limiting too many things that could be bought from their auction house it started to feel less immersion but more high stakes. There are so many ways to express economies in this Genre!

@ckaleiki @PlayLegacyGG The economy is such an important pillar for this genre. It fits so well with the High Stakes and the Immersion piller you described. The economy almost brings an entire new way to play the game. It gives another area for people to play these types of games and still succeed!

As someone working on an extraction game (@PlayLegacyGG ), its been interesting to see the commentary and reaction to Marathon. Although I haven't had a chance to play Marathon yet, some thoughts... Its clear the game is trying to casualize the "extraction genre." I think this makes sense and they wouldn't be the first studio to attempt this. But I think we have to ask ourselves: what is the extraction genre, and what makes it fun? To me, its three things: - High Stakes: Extraction games (mostly Tarkov) are sticky because each session (raid) feels like you're gambling, almost like playing poker. Players call this "gear fear," or the feeling of if you die, you're losing something meaningful (all of your loot and all of your gear). This is what gives it the adrenaline rush and unique vibe that no other genre has. - Immersion: In most games, sound is an afterthought, but for Tarkov sound is a pillar of the core game experience. Tarkov is almost a horror game, where you're sneaking around and trying not to make too much noise. Your heartrate rises and you can get legit jump scares. This also means reducing the UI, reducing or removing music, and being intentional about sound volume and attenuation. - Economy: Probably the most overlooked pillar but I think the most critical one. Tarkov is a hardcore military sim game, but it is also an RPG. It has a deep, rich crafting (bartering) and progression system that rivals MMORPGs. It has easily over 1K items. RPGs are basically about filling bars, and Tarkov has tons of them. Notice how I didn't even say that a pillar of extraction games is the extraction mechanic. Or even PvP. Extraction games are not like battle royales where the whole genre is just the circle. Its actually a lot harder game to build, because it has all of the challenges of a PvP game (balance, netcode, class/weapon/character kits) with the challenges of an RPG (progression, crafting, economy etc). What Marathon feels like is a blend of Apex + an extraction point instead of a circle. It does have some items, it does have some quests (contracts), but so far it feels shallow. But it needs something like the hideout, and players need to feel gear fear. I saw a reddit player remark "I have not felt my adrenaline kick in a single time while playing" which is a damning statement. It makes sense that designers would think that to make the genre appealing for a broader audience you should reduce gear fear, reduce the stakes. Tarkov is actually a game that seems more hardcore than it is. Yes you lose your items, but with the insurance system you'll get a lot of your items back (especially for new players where hardcore ones won't even bother with your kit). Further, players can also play scavs that give them a free kit, sometimes with pretty good loot. These systems keep the game approachable while not diluting the high stakes/gear fear mechanic in the game. I do think there is, like in battle royale, a $1B opportunity in the extraction genre. But the genre is complex and I don't think well understood by devs. It feels like there are tons of extraction games out there, but tbh if they don't have those three pillars (high stakes, immersion, economy) they're not a true extraction title. If they simply have an area where you leave the map at your own choosing, then Helldivers is also an "extraction shooter."
