A few thoughts after reading the replies to this post: We can't compromise safety just because we like stars... and I'm never a fan of infringing on personal freedoms (like having lights in your backyard for entertaining, porch lights for security, etc). However it raises a good question: at what point does the health impacts of having constant artificial light around become worse than the safety benefits of having them? By making EVERYONE think about this, the problem gets better organically without new laws or money spent. Just from seeing this post, how many of you decided to maybe turn your porch light off? Small decisions like that can help! A lot of people are suggesting a holiday where we turn off all lights. I'm 100% on board with that if it is voluntary and we don't impact businesses in a bad way. Airports need lights to function safely at night. Dense cities need streetlights for safety. I'm sure highways see more accidents when there are no overhead lights. What if one night during new moon in summer we spread "Milky Way night" where we turn off all lights for like 2 hours after astronomical dusk... entirely voluntary. If the idea went viral we might actually make an impact. We might even get local governments to cooperate and get them to dim city lights. With the right preparation, I'm sure it could be done for basically free with minimal or no adverse consequences. I know nothing about the feasibility of this, just know that the number of people that tell me they've *never* seen the milky way is depressing. Most people born today never will, unless we change something major. For me, seeing the stars changed the trajectory in my life in a positive way. I want others to experience the benefit our universe offers us. My mission has always been to improve the world by getting more people to look up.
