@S_Tech_Art @Graham__san I was a defense counsel in Oki 99-00 and had many trips going up to Iwakuni from Naha via (either) Fukuoka-Shin-Iwakuni or Hiroshima-Train-Iwakuni (bcuz they only had one DC there & Marines tend to commit crimes by the fire team). Beautiful place, especially in April-May. S/F

You stop that - Japan is not a "defeated nation." The Japanese saved the rest of humanity from extinction by taking those two on the chin early, when nukes had lower yields. If no one had seen what nukes could do until later (with much higher yields), USSR & USA would assuredly have obliterated us all. Wars are won & wars are lost, but no person or people is defeated until they are gone. Japan has risen like the Phoenix, reborn into something even more beautiful in the aftermath. NO ONE else has survived one, much less two. You guys are champs.

Dear new Japanese friends... May I beg an explanation of something of you? I'm sure the answer is different for everyone... but... WHY do you like us? Many places we have gone to war with, and even some of the ones we have gone to war to save... seem to hate us But our nations engaged in some of what is arguably the most horrific warfare in human history to that date, and it's not like you got space away from us or our culture afterwards to gain peace over it why don't you hate us like the Germans do? Or the french? or on most days, half of the British? I'm VERY happy about it, and grateful, but I have always wondered what the difference is I know much of it for us is "We had a problem, we settled it, now there's not a problem"... kind of the "2 dudes fight on the playground and end up best friends" thing

Kouji-san: In my lifetime (GenX), Japanese people have *always* been greatly respected in the US as very intelligent, cultured, and hard working. In the 80s, we were told Japan would conquer us by their superior business efforts. Even then, no one hated the Japanese. Your great captains of industry spurred us to make better cars, electronics, etc. One of our greatest westerns - The Magnificent Seven - is an adaptation of Mr. Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai.” My childhood was filled with martial arts movies and we all wanted to learn traditional Japanese martial arts. 🥋 Do not believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Americans admire and respect the Japanese for their discipline and beautiful civilization. 🙇🏻♂️

@SonohennoKuma Hayashi-san, Americans of my generation (GenX) have a deep respect and admiration for Japan. Traditional japanese martial arts exploded in popularity in the late 70s & 80s. No one here hates the Japanese at all. Japan has high culture and deep tradition.🙏🏻

My friends in America, in Japan, expressing patriotism is met with shunning. For example, if I put a Japanese flag sticker on my car, police officers will stop me for questioning. I only display the flag at my front door on Japanese holidays. Almost no one displays the flag at their home on weekdays. This is due to the past excessive claims made by the Japanese right wing, but don't you think it's natural to show patriotism to the country you were born in?
