@KirstieMAllsopp @WolfieWhittle someone I know signed their property over (albeit to a trust rather than family) with a legal agreement that they could stay in their home for the duration of their life at a nominal rent of £1/yr to avoid huge inheritance tax liabilities from which there was no exemption!

@KirstieMAllsopp @WolfieWhittle @KirstieMAllsopp what do they do now when they can no longer physically work on the farm? I doubt they get sent to the abattoir! Again, the issue here is ownership not occupancy.

@KirstieMAllsopp Yes but transferring the legal title to a farm to their children doesn’t prevent them continuing to live on the farm and/or run the farm - it’s about ownership not operation! Lots of the farmers I’ve seen being interviewed appear to already be working the farm with their kids!

@the_marchitect Do you understand anything about how the 7 years rule works, you have to actually hand it over, you can’t just say you will, what does the farmer the. live off and where?

@Jeremy_Hunt Surely this is an opportunity for Farmers to start thinking about succession planning (assets gifted 7years B4 death are exempted from Inheritance tax)? I’d much rather have a planned handover than taking on a business whilst also dealing with the grief of losing a parent! 🤷🏼

I’m trying to follow the great farming debate but, as an economics illiterate, I’m baffled. If a farm has a nominal value of, say, £3m but generates an income of only c. £40k, how can it really be worth that much? This is not, bt dubs, a loaded question. I’m interested.
