This is the necessity of theater in dire times. There can be no business as usual. The Freedom Theater of Jenin is a shining example of how the show can go on in the midst of dire circumstances, but only if it is in cultural resistance. Organize. Fight. Win.

We are not our boards. We are not our ticket sales. We are our communities. Our task is to build. To make power from the ground up. Our theaters can be performance spaces, civic institutions, and community sanctuaries all at once.

Theater organizations didn't take a stand for fear they would attract the ire of the fascist MAGA agenda, or the so-called liberal Zionists in office before them. Now it's plain to see that refusing to stand up to fascists and genocidaires only emboldens them.

UPDATE: Jonny Greenwood and Dudu Tassa's show at Hackney Church has also been cancelled. Palestinians welcome the cancellation of both of their UK shows. We reiterate our call for all venues to refuse to programme this complicit event that can only artwash genocide.

The eve of May Day is also the eve of the Tony Awards Announcements—our industry’s biggest awards show of the year. Tomorrow, when our feeds will be filled with Tony Nominations, we urge our fellow theater workers to instead storm social media with our solidarity with Palestine.

THE BOYCOTT GROWS: 30 Theatrical Orgs Endorse PACBI! Bechdel Project (New York), Worry Noise Dirty Heat (New York), and MENA Theater Makers Alliance are the latest three U.S.-based orgs to publicly endorse the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.

The US government, like the Zionist entity, is targeting movement leaders, from campus organizer Mahmoud Khalil to Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez Zeferino, a well-know organizer of farmworkers in Washington State. These targeted arrests, along with the current indiscriminate kidnapping of Black and brown immigrants by ICE, are being justified in the name of “national security.” How many more have to be killed from torturous conditions in prison, like 17 year-old Walid Khalid Abdullah Ahmad in Megiddo Prison? At New York City’s Rikers Island jails, four incarcerated people have been killed in the past month alone. Our struggles have always be linked and we will uphold this legacy.
