Start early so you can swing when you want to. Don’t put yourself in situations where the only way to get to a pitch is by being quicker. This starts in BP. Be early consistently so that you’re never late.

After the changes he set the school record for home runs. Hit .363 and was all region. The most impressive stat from 2022 was not his power numbers but his O-swing% of 12.5% (swings at pitches outside the zone).

Looking at one of my former hitters, our goal was to change some patterns in the players swing to get him on plane longer and help him elevate the ball. Prior to the changes, this player was an all conference player with an established approach and foundation of hitting.

@mason_mcrae Yes absolutely, pitchers want to develop the ability to create swing and miss, but hitters also need to train the ability to recognize different pitches and whether or not those pitches are ones they can have success swinging at.

@theblatch Isn’t part of pitching making it difficult to make decisions? Breakers/chups that start in zone and finish out, having good pitches they create chases, having pitches that play off of each other, etc. also, velo is up meaning less time to decide.

Are we giving too much credit to pitching and not reflecting on decision making?

Almost common sense that good hitters will have productive outcomes on manageable pitches, but training the ability to make these decisions is extremely underrated.

2022 DePauw Hitting Numbers -.344 avg. on pitches in the zone - .298 avg. against off-speed in zone vs. .0985 avg. on off-speed out of the zone - 2/3 of swings on off-speed out of the zone are whiffs
