Is your loved one with #dementia not drinking enough water? Try putting the drink in a bright colored or fun cup. It might help to leave post-its around the house with gentle prompts or reminders. Also, try feeding them water-rich foods like watermelon, popsicles or soups.

Notice small glimmers in your day: The feeling of the sun on your face, that nice feeling when your favorite song comes on the radio. A gentle touch. Feel the feelings in your body. Savor them like they are a delicious meal. The more you flex this muscle, the more it will grow.

If your nervous system is used to being dysregulated, you might not know how it feels to be in your body when it's regulated. This is a muscle that you can grow. Here's how:

In NY: ● 20% of New Yorkers experience a mental health disorder per year ● 10% are in severe psychological distress ● 4% are diagnosed with a serious mental illness #Mentalhealth affects too many of us and too much of our lives for it to not be our collective priority.

Caregiver reminder: Your loved one with mental illness is just like you. They are a person. They need love, connection & acceptance. Too often, people with SMI are ostracized or left behind. It’s the illness you’re frustrated with. The person is not their disease. #caregiving

It’s #mensmentalhealthmonth & as the number of male #caregivers grows, so do their mental health concerns. A simple conversation with a man in your life can be game-changing. Share resources with them, whether therapists or hotlines. Let them know it’s ok to be #vulnerable. 💜

Practitioners: #Caregivers aren’t on your payroll, but they’re a crucial part of your team. If they go unsupported or unseen, your ROI suffers too. We partner with private practices to support caregivers so they are able to show up because when they thrive, you thrive, too.

70% of family caregivers in the US report difficulties balancing their career with caregiver responsibilities. Caregivers shouldn’t have to choose between career and caring. We will all need caregivers at some point, and they deserve more support. #caregiving

Amazing doc by @PBS highlighting the caregiver crisis. Thanks, PBS, for educating the masses on this crucial topic. #caregiving #pbs

“Today’s the day! Caregiving is now streaming on pbs.org and the PBS app. Interweaving caregivers' lived experiences with the history of US caregiving policy and practice, the film feels more timely and important now than ever. It was an honor to work on this project alongside so many remarkable colleagues at Ark Media, WETA, and Lea Pictures, and alongside so many incredible people who appeared in front of the camera, who have dedicated their lives to caregiving and to supporting caregivers.” — Ruth Fertig, Documentary Producer Congratulations and thanks to everyone who helped bring Caregiving to life. This film is such an important reminder of how essential caregivers are in our country and how often their work goes unseen. We’re especially grateful that it highlights the experiences of more than 5.4 million Caregiving Youth, young people under 18 who care for a family member with a chronic illness, disability, mental health condition, or age-related issue. (In the UK, they’re known as Young Carers.) We’re so glad to have been part of this powerful project. 📷: Ruth Fertig and Connie Siskowski, RN, PhD, Founder and President of the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY). Don't forget to share your Caregiving Youth story on the Well Beings story wall and use the hashtags: #WellBeings #ShareYourCaregivingStory #CaregivingYouth #KidsAreCaregiversToo

Caregiver tip: When helping your loved one take their meds, avoid coercive/negative statements like, “if you don’t take your meds, you’ll have an episode.” Try positive language like, “this medication will help you control your mood so you feel better.” #caregiving #mentalhealth

You can do everything right and still become disabled. You can eat right, exercise, take vitamins, get sun, and still become disabled. No one is immune to disability. We’re all vulnerable. The sooner you acknowledge that, the sooner you’ll realize accessibility benefits everyone.

"Balance the power of saying no and self-care. I have to take care of myself & not feel guilty about it. I will make sure that I will not overdo everything because I feel like, if I don't accept everything that's happening, then maybe it seems like I'm ungrateful." - @selenagomez

May is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth 🧠 This is a great month to remember that, especially for caregivers, rest is not a reward. It's your right. Sleep, regular breaks, and boundaries are preventative and necessary mental health tools, not luxuries. #caregiving #Caregiver #rest

QUICK #Caregiver TIP: USE YOUR PHONE LIKE A MEDICAL BRACELET Keep critical info—medications, allergies, emergency contacts—right on your home screen, in notes, or a medical ID app. Just like a medical bracelet, your phone can speak for you (or your loved one) in an emergency!

Insurance companies cover physical health more than mental health. Caregiver families often have to pay out of pocket for experimental treatments that may or may not work. This results in a lot of dashed hopes. Caregivers need more financial and emotional support. #caregiving
