@Jackkk There’s a point about activity, but invitations and results both matter. You still have to prove it consistently against the field.

Hans Niemann explains why it’s so hard to pass Magnus Carlsen as world number one in Chess “Magnus Carlsen plays like 10-20 games a year. In chess, there’s no minimum activity requirement to not decay in your ranking” “Guys like Magnus can play 10 games a year for 10 years and it’s very hard for anyone to surpass him because he’s not gonna compete against people chasing him” “He avoids me pretty well, if he’s playing in a tournament he’ll make sure I’m not invited. He’s playing in a tournament in Sweden this may, I won it in 2022 and they never invited me back…”

@Jackkk Big claims. At this level, results over time will decide whether that narrative holds.

Hans Niemann believes he’ll still become world champion despite cheating allegations from Magnus Carlsen “The fact he was broken by a 19 year old and never admitted to it, I feel like his aura is rapidly decreasing” “I see the delusional vision that I’m gonna become world champion and once I become world champion…” “People are gonna look back and be like wow he just stole three years of this kid’s life and did irreparable damage and still became the world champion in spite of that” “I think that story will be so inspirational that it’ll overshadow all the negativity that surrounded all of that”

@PHChess Good reminder. AI can assist, but without verification it can just as easily mislead.

A very interesting example on the problems of using AI, but not double checking facts. Claude starts inventing different historical results in Candidates and WC tournaments, leading to wrong statistics. In reality, Anand scored +5 =7 -2, not +3 =11 in the 2005 WC tournament!

GM Jacob Aagaard@GMJacobAagaard

You can always write whatever story you want and make the stats fit... I would say that 2007, where your player, Anand, drew 10 games, has also higher. The second highest in the modern era, only exceeded by Anand without your assistance... Of course he also made 11 draws in 2005, where you helped him, but there he did not win. The matches where you were running one of the teams were very drawish. After, they were less so. The reason for the high draw percentage this time had two causes I can see. Firstly, at least two players, Wei Yi and Bluebaum, were not in fighting mood at all. Both seems unable to beat anyone, but are also quite hard to beat. The second reason is that Sindarov early on left many of the his competitors so far behind they "went into holiday mode" (that's a quote). I spent a little bit of time asking Claude to collect some statistics. Make of them what you want. There is no doubt that 960 is more difficult and should create more decisive results. You can also make the goals in football bigger and there will be more goals. Does it become more interesting? I would assume not. I had hoped the Freestyle Tour would be a success, but it simply was not. I wanted to like it, but it just did not feel like chess at all. And I have not yet given up on chess. claude.ai/public/artifac…

@PHChess Elo measures strength well, but rankings are about more than that. The real debate is what we want to reward.

As this debate turns up again: The Elo system is excellent at measuring strength. The relevant question is if this is what we want for our World ranking. You can also argue you prefer volume in results to matter. Or like in other sports, a money list etc. etc.

History has been made today. At just 14 years old, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş crosses 2700 threshold on live ratings, becoming the youngest player in the history of chess to do so. A monumental achievement for Yağız and a proud day for Türkiye. 🇹🇷

How do these "fast-classical" matches that affect Standard ratings get approved when the announcement of possibly starting to rate faster time controls said "It will strictly apply to major or traditional tournaments, approved by the FIDE QC." 🤔 fide.com/fide-updates-r…
Hans Niemann@HansMokeNiemann

I would like to announce my next classical matches. May 24-26 vs Jorden Van Foreest (Belgrade) 6 games classical 60+30 May 29-June 1 vs Ian Nepomniatchi (Belgrade). 8 games classical 60+30 I believe 1-1 matches are the future of chess, inviting all chess content creators to both matches!

While the tweet has gone viral, all negative comments attack me instead of addressing the substance of my point. If you want to be the #1 ranked classical player in the world, you have to play more tournaments, not a select few every year.
Hans Niemann@HansMokeNiemann

For those without context, the supposed #1 player would be considered inactive in any other sport and wouldn’t be able to maintain his ranking. Tennis is the perfect example. Rating/rankings should reward ACTIVITY!
