2/2 Can't emphasize this finding too strongly: It's not just that explicit instruction of procedures is less useful than helping kids to construct mathematical principles for themselves. It's that explicit instruction of procedures can do damge by impeding understanding.

Activity consistent with an actual, coherent understanding isn't Wrong™ in any global sense. Saying it is makes it harder to address actual confusion. twitter.com/jfarmer/status…

Putting something into action and putting it into words are both projections of whatever understanding you have. So are pantomiming, drawing, coding, etc. We only ever engage with those projections. I don't think we "understand" so much as "have understandings".
