The Content Technologist is no longer posting updates or following Twitter (except for days where literally nothing else is going on, which is none of the days). Subscribe to the newsletter or, if you must social media, we're kinda active on LinkedIn. content-technologist.com/start/

I've been trying to teach the chatbot to write in iambic pentameter (possible because it's a math formula), but it can't. Perhaps GPT4 will understand meter, scansion and other poetic devices besides rhyme scheme.

@lilyraynyc That's my comment exactly: ChatGPT will "lie" about its sources and its output, as long as it's in complete sentences. The bot will insist it is correct, with the caveat that it may not be correct. It is a math formula, not meaning.

@Chronotope Also I thought the precision was driven by the access to more and more credit card data, fewer cash purchases, etc... this is a really long way to overengineer a really inefficient ad system, considering non-contextual targeting doesn't work all that well, comparatively.

and this precision creates *immense* pressure on the ad tech ecosystem to increase precision and drives up the overall pricing the platform can ask for its ads, with huge value for the platform... twitter.com/Chronotope/sta…

@profcarroll @swodinsky I have a slide from many years ago that talks about how this cycle inevitably impacts the larger ad-driven web and continually raises the ad tech tax as well.

This is 100% true! Data you create prob isn't that valuable on an individual basis. Economies of scale etc... but increasingly I am thinking this is not the only way that personalization systems cause you to labor in such a way that they extract value. There's... negative data.

@Chronotope This is an extremely long way of saying "they didn't know how else to make more money except put more ad units on the page"

So, design optimization moved to become in service of the ads, not the users, & more and more ads were placed between you and the meat of the service you wished to access in an attempt to force you to comply with the predictions of your interests made by the targeting technology

As I wrote in the last issue... if you're getting more than 5% of traffic from Twitter you are doing every other channel badly.

Yo @descript I love y'all, but you've got some pretty amazing technology if we're all going to be watching 28 hours of video per day by the end of the decade.
