Prolonged waits for emergency care, contrary to the popular myth of the inappropriate use by non-urgent patients, is actually a reflection of woefully insufficient hospital ward capacity leading to prolonged stays, by admitted patients, in the ER.

Physician efficiency has very little impact on ED patient throughout. Other organisational & system factors have a much greater effect such as availability of support staff / speed of investigations / speed of consults / availability of discharge pathways.

From 8am on Tuesday 25 July to 8am on Thursday 27 July, radiographers will be taking 48 hours of industrial action. There will therefore be no walk-in X-ray service at Northern General Hospital, Royal Hallamshire Hospital & Charles Clifford Dental Hospital during this period.
