@DeptfordWife1 @joshstrap13 @AMCTheatres When there’s a standard of 20-25 mins of previews, a lot of people don’t show up until about 15-20 min after the slated start time. Less a complaint about less trailers and more a complaint about AMC changing their typical preshow and causing people to miss the start of the film.

@katereinking @rfruitwa Totally valid if you don’t think the production worked that well. I know a few who feel the same. But I think most agree it’s a really excellent production of the show with a top notch cast, and it’s likely getting into these director lineups on that alone.

@thefilmtiger @rfruitwa I just don’t agree that it succeeds in every aspect and I’m curious what makes it work so well for you. I do think the cast is stellar but there are specific character arcs that are such a miss for me I have to chalk it up to the directorial vision just not being present

My hot take is that it’s a weak year for theatre. We were blessed last year with such an ON cycle & now it’s an off year. You are going to end up seeing nominations for shows & performances that make it simply because there isn’t much to choose from

@katereinking @rfruitwa The production doesn’t stand out for how fresh the direction is or that the direction is inventive or really elevates the material necessarily. But it’s a fantastic revival that succeeds in pretty much every aspect, and THAT is also due to the direction.

@katereinking @rfruitwa You’re right that the direction of Ragtime isn’t what makes that production so excellent. But direction of a musical is all-encompassing. It’s not just in moments that are “different” than previous prods, it’s also in the performances, the way the show flows, looks, casting, etc.

@JoVoiceofreason yes, that’s exactly my point. it was an early release (just like PHM) and even though it had MASSIVE critical and box office success, everyone was underestimating its award chances. And Wunmi got in. Not saying it’s a lock, but to underestimate Hüller’s chances would be silly.
