@magozone23 A museum or even a digital archive of games and media you can play for free or a price would be nice. Like the library of Alexandria, except for games and media that are eternally preserved for future generations. I hope this can happen one day

@migakiseiten You asked if abandonware was really abandoned. I was simply answering that. I apologize if some nuance was lost in translation. I appreciate your patience in this discussion throughout the day.

@theflammifer @MrLeadslinger Sounds about right.. but steak is expensive on the west coast USA. I am guessing proximity to the plains plays a factor. 😀

@IkenoYuki The problem is we keep changing the name of the room with the toilet because it is impolite, and then the new word becomes impolite eventually and we have to find another new one.

@NAITOTokihiro This is unfortunately probably true. It reminds me of the era where video game companies made their games obnoxiously difficult so that they could not be beaten in a weekend rental.

@pero_okumura @NeoNusso The automatic translation made a mistake. It made it look like he said there are 4 times as many pirates as legitimate users on Steam itself. Rather, the pirates are not on Steam. That is the confusion.

@migakiseiten There's also a lot of those old games where it's not clear who the legal rights even belong to, and it's not worth it to any of the potential owners to try to fight over it in court, so they stay lost forever.

@migakiseiten As for our "abandonware", the term started because of those games from the 1980s-1990s where most games were just made by one or two people. They moved on with their lives after, and often went into a non-games career. So those games really were "abandoned".

@NeoNusso The translation is suggesting that you say there are 4 times as many pirates as real users on Steam, rather than that the pirates are 4 times the Steam users. This is why you are getting such confused replies from English speakers.

@migakiseiten Maybe I should have mentioned this earlier. There is a concept in the western world called "abandonware". Have you heard this term, or do you have an equivalent in Japanese?

@migakiseiten This is why I am trying to make the point that "preserving" a game is not the same as "pirating" it. If the indie game stops being available, someone who has it will find a way to make it be available again.

@migakiseiten Indeed. Some of the hostile behavior from American companies is due to our own laws.

@migakiseiten To keep that sort of system around would require Japanese companies to cooperate with Western fans in such matters. I don't suppose that is likely, but maybe things can change. Cover Corp, for example, has figured out a way by giving a clear explanation on their English website.

@migakiseiten For what it's worth, it's very much frowned upon here to pirate indie games or works made by small creators. Even the kind of person who pirates a game made by a big corporation released last week will look down on someone who does that.

@migakiseiten Okay, I believe I understand what you mean. We do have our own version of that culture in the indie games space, but it does not exist with corporate things because of the way American corporations behave.

Theres the whole like japanese perspective on media piracy argument going on, and the one thing i keep seeing is "but do you not realize that pirating harms the company?" and I dont think alot of them realize in the west we LOVE seeing companies get harmed, even ones we like

@migakiseiten Essentially, if a person in America tries to do a fan project of any kind the way you do it in Japan, he will be blocked by the company after contacting them. So the strategy became to develop in secret and then loudly release to the whole world when finished.
