AI has been a hugely positive change in my life so far, and I doubt that’s going to change. I believe it will mostly have a negative impact on those who resist adapting to new technologies, while benefiting those who are quick to learn and evolve. If you disagree, I’d love to hear your perspective.

80% of my 6-year video editing journey was wasted because I didn't understand this one thing. I wanted to make video editing my business. I knew I was creative and way too good for a 9-to-5. But I was led in the wrong direction for 5 years straight. Bad decisions. Wasted time. Maxing out at $500/month working my butt off every day while balancing high school and a job at Walmart. Then everything changed in my last year. I made over $10,000 from a single client. Hit $5,000 in a single month. Got way more freedom with my time while actually making decent money. The difference? I finally learned the structure of how to actually make money with this business. Now I'm opening ODYSSEY Community to help video editors avoid the same 6 years of mistakes I made. Community-based program with courses. Everything that helped me make thousands per month. I'm opening it with an early bird price for the first 200 people: $20/month (normally $40). Use code "EARLYBIRD" at checkout. After that, it's full price. You literally get half off FOREVER. If you don't take this opportunity, you're being very stupid ngl 😭 💀 I'm doing this because I love to serve and I don't want people wasting 6 years of their life like I did. whop.com/odyssey-commun…

I used to be embarrassed to say I was a video editor. And yet, it was my main business. Yes, I was editing gaming videos with flashy effects that looked "cool" but I wouldn't even share them on my social media because deep down, I hated it. My portfolio was full of work that attracted more cheap clients instead of better ones. But everything changed when I started editing for business results instead of entertainment. Now I create videos that actually move the needle. Testimonials that convert prospects. Educational content that builds authority. Social media videos that generate leads. I'm proud to put my name on every piece because each video serves a real business purpose.

I used to work 80+ hours a week between my restaurant job and editing. I'd edit until 3 AM, wake up at 6 AM, go to school, go to work, and immediately start editing again. My entire life was consumed by trying to make a measly $500/month from video editing. The problem wasn't my work ethic. It was my approach. I was editing gaming videos that took days to complete. And don't even get me started on the revisions 😭 Then I switched to business content and created systems. Now I spend 3 hours max per video. I have templates, workflows, and boundaries. My main client gets consistent results, and I get my life back. Here's what changed everything: I stopped making every video a masterpiece and started making every video effective. Business owners don't need 47 transitions and custom motion graphics. They need content that gets them customers.

I used to compete with editors who would charge for $50 per video. sometimes it would be $10 dollars 😭 I thought I had to match their prices to get clients. So I'd spend 3 days editing a gaming video for $120, then they'd ghost me forever. I was trapped in a race to the bottom. Then I realized something: I wasn't competing with cheaper editors. I was competing with the client doing nothing. Business owners don't care if someone can just "edit cheaper". They care about getting results without the headache. So I stopped talking about editing and started talking about problems I solve. "I turn your long-form content into a month of social media posts" hits different than "I edit videos for cheap." When you solve $10,000 problems, charging $1,000 feels like a bargain.

My biggest video editing client paid me almost $10,000 over the past year. He's never thought about switching editors.Never asked for a discount. Never ghosted me when asking for a price change. I used to think clients like this didn't exist 😭 I was stuck in the gaming niche where clients ghost you after one project and always want "unlimited revisions" for $120. The difference? I stopped being a video editor and became a content strategist. Instead of "I'll edit your video," I said "I'll turn your 1-hour podcast into 10 pieces of content that get you leads." Stop selling editing. Start selling outcomes. Ask potential clients: "What's your biggest challenge with video content?" Then position your editing as the solution to that specific problem. When you solve business problems instead of just editing videos, clients pay you like a business partner, not a freelancer.

I was that editor sending hundreds+ DMs a day for $125 gaming videos. Staying up until 3 AM. Praying my restaurant shifts wouldn't conflict with editing deadlines. Barely touching $500/month 💀 Then I made one simple switch: I stopped editing for gamers and started editing for business owners. Why? Bc business owners pay for RESULTS and VALUE. They need consistent content, so they pay retainers instead of one-off projects. Here's what you do: 1. Pick 3 business niches you find interesting. 2. Study their content for a week. 3. Then reach out offering to solve their specific video problems. Don't say "I edit videos." Say "I help coaches turn their long-form content into 5 short-form videos that get them clients." That one shift took me from BARELY $500/month to making $2000/month working half the hours.

Twitter outreach is DYING. It's almost 2025 and if you're still using Twitter to find clients... you're doomed for failure... kind of let me explain. Twitter for service-based businesses used to be the best way to get clients. but not anymore. So, what is? Personal Brands Personal Brands are taking the world by storm on each platform, but mainly Instagram. They're allowing a new, refreshing way to inbound clients, and it's actually WORKING. I haven't been active on Twitter because of this. Instagram is taking its place, and posting about your business or tips on your target niche is the new way of getting clients. Are you going to continue to beat the dead horse, or move onto proven methods? I've been building my personal brand, go check it out lol instagram.com/johnvfxofficia…

@JohnVFXofficial Interesting take! I'm going to be starting a 30 Day Challenge next month where I post video content every day for 30 days on X, Insta, , YT, Tik Tok and LinkedIn. So should get some good data from that!
