Prison to purpose, one line of Laravel at a time. You've heard me say this before. I believe everybody deserves a second chance. In my time in prison, I learned: - How often people misjudge - How unique prisoners are - How many prisoners desire to change their lives People grow, and we need to accept that change. This is why I believe that with one Laravel line at a time, we can change the world.

#Laravel tip: Use lockForUpdate() to Prevent Race Conditions Instead of allowing multiple processes to update the same row simultaneously, lockForUpdate() prevents conflicts. Ensure only one process modifies an order at a time

#Laravel tip: Use firstOrCreate() to Avoid Duplicate Records Instead of manually checking for duplicates, firstOrCreate() finds or inserts records in one step. Find a user by email or create a new one if it doesn’t exist:

#Laravel tip: Use Policy Gates to Protect Routes Based on Conditions Instead of using if statements everywhere, Gates centralize authorization logic. The benefit? Now, only admins can access the route, keeping security consistent. Restrict access to an admin-only route using a Gate:

Prison and drugs to happiness and abundance. I started experimenting with drugs at 14, and by my early 20s, I was in the grip of a severe heroin and opiate addiction. Here’s what you didn't know about me: (For all my new followers) —------------------------------------------------------- Let’s rewind a decade back… I know you’re probably wondering: ‘‘How do you end up in prison?’’ Well, by being on the wrong side of life. In my early days, I was: → Addicted to drugs → Around the wrong people That stupid life resulted in me being in prison for nearly a decade. Around a 7+ year felony charge was what I was facing. But you would think… This is where you make the change, right? In my case—no. I was still finding ways to smoke some weed in prison. Sounds crazy, right? I’m going to be honest with you… I remember sitting in that damn jail cell and thinking: ‘’It’s either carry on with this or face reality and make a change.’’ So how did I make the change and land a $60K job after prison? —--------------------------------------------------------- Let me tell you… The epiphany only hit a few months in. I needed to make the change. • Seeing my family disappointed and broken • No one believing in me I couldn't blame them. So I fell into what I loved the most. And that was coding. Before prison, in the early 90s, I started teaching myself programming with Visual Basic and C++. With the basic skills I knew, one day I was given the offer to serve 7 years in… the reentry department, helping fellow inmates prepare for release by organizing community resources and offering assistance with resumes. In these 7 years, I learned, taught, and experienced PHP (V5 to be exact). This opportunity was my hope that I could make a change. By 2017, I had built a prison job search web app using Laravel, PHP, and Bootstrap—all self-taught, all while behind bars. It’s not something I took for granted. During that same year, I applied for a Backend Developer job at a company called BG Products. Here's the wild part—I was still incarcerated when I got the interview. I was upfront about my felony conviction, fully expecting rejection. But… they didn’t care about my past—they cared about my skills. I was offered the job at $60,000/year, which was $10K more than I even asked for. To say I was shocked is an understatement. Fast forward a few years later… I’m clean and happier than ever, building software and living my best life. A change is in all of us, and now I’ve made it my goal to… help others with criminal records find their path in tech. I believe in second chances because I am a second chance. With one line of code at a time—change can happen. Here to help, Larry.B P.S.: If you read this far—thank you! I hope you liked my story, and if you have any questions, my DMs are open :)
