Few songs captured the fragile relationship between Pete Doherty and Carl Barât quite like “Music When The Lights Go Out.” Released on The Libertines in 2004, the track arrived as tensions within the band were escalating, giving its lyrics about friendship, distance and loss an added emotional weight.

British guitar music was starting to sound scruffier again when The Libertines emerged in 2002. The title track from Up the Bracket captured Pete Doherty and Carl Barât’s chaotic chemistry, helping spark a garage rock revival that would influence a new wave of British bands in the years that followed.
