From Rick Brundrett @thenervesc: South Carolina has started releasing short summaries of complaints filed against judges, but even with this “new transparency” most of the system is still secret. Complaints include serious accusations like bias, threats, or sharing confidential case info, but about 77% are dismissed and discipline is often limited to confidential actions such as letters of caution. Both the complaints and resulting discipline are anonymous, details limited, and judges not named, leaving citizens unable to know if a judge received multiple complaints from different people. thenerve.org/summaries_of_j…

On Wednesday, the South Carolina Policy Council submitted a letter to the South Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee, raising serious concerns about S.960. We assembled a coalition of organizations from across the state to oppose the bill in its current form, citing significant constitutional concerns related to free speech and donor privacy. @PalmettoFamily @PalmettoPromise @AFPSCarolina

(1/3) The S.C. Legislature has too much control over the nomination of judges. H.4755 (JMSC reform) will… ✅ Empower the governor to appoint all 12 members of the JMSC, whom will in turn nominate judges. ✅ Ban sitting lawmakers from serving on the JMSC. ✅ Ban recent donors to the governor’s campaign from serving on the JMSC. ✅ Remove the nominee cap to improve competition. ✅ Remove DEI considerations for a greater focus on merit….

H.3530 (magistrate reform) and H.4755 (JMSC reform) would improve judicial independence in South Carolina. Both bills should be advanced, although the magistrate bill should add language that removes senatorial delegations’ role in the appointment process.
